SLCPD Releases Body-Worn Camera Footage from April 2, 2026, OICISALT LAKE CITY — Today, in compliance with Salt Lake City ordinance 2.10.200, the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) is releasing body-worn camera (BWC) footage from a case that resulted in an officer involved critical incident (OICI) protocol activation. Salt Lake City Police Department detectives investigated 37-year-old Lawrence Vigil for drug distribution and possession of a firearm, and a judge granted a search warrant for Vigil’s apartment and his person. At 12:18 a.m. on Thursday, April 2, 2026, members of the Salt Lake City Police Department SWAT Team served the search warrant on Vigil’s apartment at 49 South 800 East. Officers surrounded the building and began to loudly announce “Police” multiple times. While officers were breaching the door to the apartment a man, later identified as Vigil, tried to jump out the 3rd floor window but went back inside. A short time later Vigil shoved the screen out of the window while holding an object in his hand that resembled a handgun. A SWAT officer who was watching the window shot at and struck Vigil. Vigil dropped something to the ground and then retreated into the apartment. Officers inside the building rendered aid to Vigil who was eventually taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. After being released from the hospital officers booked Vigil into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail. Vigil has been charged in Third District Court with one count of assault on a peace officer with a dangerous weapon, one count of possession of a weapon by a restricted person and obstruction of justice. Vigil was also indicted by a grand jury for being a felon in possession of a firearm in the United States District Court in the District of Utah. The involved officer has been placed on administrative leave consistent with department policy. No further information can be released at this time. Body-Worn-Camera 1 ### |
