Community Liaison Officers

The Salt Lake City Police Department has special officers devoted to grassroots problem-solving within the community. The Community Liaison Officers attend monthly community council meetings within the City’s seven City Council Districts. While these officers share and receive a lot of information at these meetings, it is daily interaction with residents that fosters the trust necessary to tackle public safety issues together. If you have a problem in your neighborhood—from graffiti to loud parties, drug dealers to gangs—your Community Liaison Officer is ready to connect you with the law enforcement and community resources necessary to address the issue. Community Outreach

The mission of the Community Outreach Unit is to engage the public in order to establish and grow partnerships with SLCPD to make the community a safer place. This is accomplished by a variety of engagement opportunities that are offered to the public so they are more aware of how the police department functions.

Salt Lake City Explorers

The Salt Lake City Police Department Explorer Program helps young people learn about police work, explore law enforcement careers, and build understanding with officers. It teaches how policing works, even for those who don’t pursue it as a career. Although it is not a prerequisite for acceptance into the program, the Post is designed as a vocational interest for young adults, ages 14 to 20, who are interested in a future career in Law Enforcement. Participants volunteer their time, take part in monthly activities, and help with department and community programs.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • Membership in a law enforcement Explorer Post is open to young adults ages 14 to 20.
  • Parental approval is required for those under 18, which includes signatures by the Explorer and their parents on a general liability release form.
  • A check of the applicant’s background to determine the individual has not been convicted of a serious crime or is guilty of moral turpitude.
  • A scholastic standard requiring minimum grades for entry (2.0 or higher GPA) and no serious school discipline record.
  • Law enforcement Explorer Posts have open membership, with care being given to checking the applicant’s records. The ability of a Post to be effective depends on the quality of the individuals involved.

Promising Youth Program

The Salt Lake City Police Department's Promising Youth Program is a 15-week prevention and intervention program for youth ages 8–18. We work within schools to teach life skills, emotional regulation, conflict resolution, and how to resist negative influences like violence or gangs.

Promising Youth Summer Opportunity (PYSO)

A free, 6-week summer program for youth (ages 12–18) filled with adventure, education, and service. Held Tuesday–Thursday separated into 3-week sessions held in June and July.
