November 6, 2021SLCPD Releases Updated Crime Control Plan
SALT LAKE CITY — Today, Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown and Mayor Erin Mendenhall released an update to the 2021 Crime Control Plan to lower crime, improve response times, fill funded and unfunded sworn positions and to continue building community relationships.
The SLCPD will follow short-medium-and long-term strategies to help with its progression. The strategies announced today include expanding recruitment and hiring efforts, developing a violent crimes task force, implementing the Police Civilian Response Team, expanding the department’s call diversion program and its online reporting capabilities.
“The foundation of the Salt Lake City Police Department is to serve its community members by building upon our traditions and fostering a culture of respect and compassion toward everyone. Without the unwavering commitment of the women and men of the Salt Lake City Police Department, our organization could not have overcome the unforeseen challenges of 2020 that continued into the current year,” said Chief Mike Brown.
The SLCPD Violent Crimes Task Force will provide dedicated resources to lead the effort to address emerging violent crime patterns and increase accountability for repeat offenders of violent crime. This task force will work with existing resources within the department to investigate assaults, criminal homicides, drug offenses, kidnappings, sexual and weapon offenses.
The Police Civilian Response Team will start with the hiring of Police Telephonic Specialists. These non-sworn positions will take telephonic police reports on low-level calls for service that don’t need an in-person officer response so sworn officers are available for higher priority calls. Examples of these low-level calls for service include non-injury hit and run crashes, ID theft, lost property, theft, vandalism, and car prowls.
As part of the updated Crime Control Plan, the department will provide bonuses for current officers who refer a lateral officer who is then successfully hired and will explore a housing incentive program for officers.
Other strategies include working with the City Council to modify the department’s take-home car policy, creating specialty positions within the department to better serve our business communities in each patrol district, continue its community reestablishment efforts and revitalize its Volunteer Corps program.
The Salt Lake City Police Department remains dedicated to reducing criminal activity occurring in the city and to serving and protecting crime victims.
