SLCPD Investigating Unfounded Report of Active Shooter at East High School
SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) is investigating an unfounded report of an active shooter at East High School. This investigation started at 11:05 a.m. on Thursday, December 5, 2024, when SLC911 received a single call from a person, off-campus, reporting an active shooter at East High School, located at 840 South 1300 East. Officers throughout the city, including SLCPD SWAT officers and detectives, responded to assist the SLCPD School Resource Officer (SRO) already at the school when the call came out. Officers, using their training, formed an Emergency Action Team (EAT) and entered the school. There were no signs of an active shooting occurring. These signs generally include people running out of the school, multiple 9-1-1 calls, sounds of screaming, the smell of gunpowder, sounds of gunfire, or other visual signs of an emergency. Officers worked with school administrators and determined no shooting occurred and that there was no threat. Officers gave the all clear at 11:10 a.m. At 11:11 a.m., the SLCPD notified community members, including media, that officers were investigating an unconfirmed report of an active shooter and advised that as of 11:08 a.m., officers were on scene and there were no signs of a shooting. This information was also shared on the SLCPD’s X (formerly Twitter) platform. Based on the preliminary investigation, a parent received second-hand information from their child that another student had pointed a gun at them off-campus. The parent then called 9-1-1 and reported an active shooter at the high school. SROs have identified everyone involved in the reported firearm pointing incident and have not found any evidence of a firearm being pointed or on campus. The Salt Lake City Police Department regularly trains for situations such as this. Chief Mike Brown stated he is proud of the response of officers to help ensure public safety. The Salt Lake City Police Department recognizes the assistance from the Salt Lake City School District, Salt Lake City Fire Department, and Gold Cross Ambulance. The Department also recognizes the many outside agencies that contacted the department to provide resources and assistance, including the Utah Department of Public Safety. Several SLCPD Public Information Officers (PIOs) responded to the scene and provided community updates. There is no other information available for release at this time. ### |
