Using this online reporting system allows you to submit a report immediately for free.
Upon approval, you will receive an official case number and a summary of submission for documentation.

Make sure the answer is YES to the below statements before submitting:

  This is not an emergency.

  This incident occured within the Salt Lake City jurisdiction.

  This did not occur on a state highway.

  You have a current email address that you check regularly.

Not all incidents may be reported online.

  • Burglary (if no forced was used)
  • Criminal Mischief / Damage Property / Vandalism
  • Graffiti (except religious institutions) 
  • Harassments (unwanted communication) Non-Domestic Violence
  • Larceny / Thefts from building and yards
  • Shoplifting (suspect not on scene)
  • Car Strips (including catalytic converter)
  • Bike Thefts and Strips
  • Frauds including by wire, false pretenses, swindles, theft of services, credit cards, identity theft, impersonations
  • Hit and Run traffic crashes that have no injuries.
  • Lost Property
  • Supplemental Reporting to an existing police report number. 
  • Car Prowls or Vehicle Burglary

  Not Accepted Online:

If your report is not permitted to be filed online,
please contact dispatch at 801-799-3000.

  • If the value of loss/damage/theft is over $25,000.00 or Fraud is over $100,000.00
  • Firearms - If it is lost, missing, or stolen, an officer will need to complete a more comprehensive review.  
  • Stolen Vehicles or License Plates
  • Damage or vandalism caused by fire or explosives
  • Graffiti or vandalism at religious institutions
  • Any crime that would qualify or be defined as Domestic Violence 
  • Any assaults or threats

Process upon completion of the report:

All cases filed using the Online Police Reporting System will be forwarded to the Salt Lake City Police Department and reviewed.

You will receive a temporary case number for your records.

Upon review, if further investigation of your case is needed prior to being approved, you may be contacted by a detective.

2What if this happened in another city? Can I file a report using this online police reporting system?
No, If a crime took place outside of the Salt Lake City Police Department’s jurisdiction please call the police department for that city.
3What if this happened on a state freeway?
If this took place on a state freeway, please call the Highway Patrol Office nearest you.
4What is a known suspect?
A known suspect is when you or someone else knows the person or where to find the person who committed the crime or the license plate number of the vehicle the suspect(s) were in.
