Police Chief Brian Redd

Brian Redd was appointed and sworn in as the 47th Chief of Police for the Salt Lake City Police Department, effective March 5, 2025. His appointment follows a recommendation by Mayor Erin Mendenhall on February 20, 2025, and subsequent approval by the Salt Lake City Council on March 4, 2025.

Chief Redd brings a distinguished career in law enforcement, corrections, and public safety leadership, with more than two decades of experience in state and local government, law enforcement operations, and criminal investigations.

Before leading the SLCPD, Utah Governor Spencer J. Cox appointed Chief Redd as the Executive Director of the Utah Department of Corrections (UDC) in May 2023. In this role, he oversaw and directed UDC’s two state prisons, six community correctional centers, and five Adult Probation and Patrol Districts, managing a workforce of approximately 2,900 employees, including nearly 2,000 certified correctional officers. Under his leadership, the UDC supervised approximately 23,000 individuals, with a mission to protect communities and improve lives.

Chief Redd also has experience in the private sector, where he served as a Vice President and Manager in the Compliance Division of Goldman Sachs. There, he led the Private Wealth Management (PWM) U.S. Surveillance Team and played a pivotal role in the Firmwide Insider Threat Team, overseeing compliance and risk management initiatives.

His 21-year career with the Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS) further highlights his leadership in law enforcement. Beginning as a state trooper, he advanced through the ranks, serving as agent, sergeant, lieutenant, captain, and ultimately chief special agent. During his tenure with Utah DPS, he held key leadership roles, including Director of the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) and Director of the Statewide Information and Analysis Center (SIAC), overseeing statewide criminal investigations, intelligence operations, and public safety strategies.

Throughout his career, Chief Redd has been a dedicated advocate for public safety, law enforcement integrity, and community engagement. His efforts have focused on enhancing law enforcement’s response to victims of crime, building trust and transparency between law enforcement and the community, addressing challenges related to crime, mental health, substance abuse, and homelessness, strengthening policing and public safety strategies. His collaborative approach to policing emphasizes proactive crime prevention, smart and ethical policing practices, and the integration of evidence-based strategies to improve public safety outcomes.

Chief Redd has served on numerous boards, commissions, and advisory panels dedicated to public safety and community safety and health. These responsibilities include serving the Utah Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice, the Utah Sentencing Commission, the International Association of Chiefs of Police Committee on Terrorism, the Utah Crime Victims Council, Volunteers of America Utah, Solutions Utah, the Utah Alcoholic Beverage Control Advisory Board, and the Utah Refugee Board of Advisors.

A Utah native, Chief Redd holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Utah State University and an Executive Master of Public Administration (MPA) from Brigham Young University. He is a dedicated public servant who values integrity, professionalism, and the responsibility of law enforcement to serve and protect all members of our community.

Chief Redd and his wife, Erin, are the proud parents of four children and are committed to the Salt Lake City community and its future. He looks forward to leading the Salt Lake City Police Department with a focus on innovation, accountability, and community collaboration.
