December 10, 2012 — The Salt Lake City Police Department is visiting city high schools this month to launch its annual “kNOw more … kNOw DRUGS” Student Art Contest.
“While the art contest creates an opportunity for officers to talk with teens about the consequences of drug use, the greater purpose is getting teens talking with each other,” said Chief Chris Burbank, “because they have a better chance of getting through to each other. It is that power we hope to harness with this contest.”
School Resource Officers will visit art classes to talk about the state of drug use and abuse in Salt Lake City, providing insight that students may find valuable not only in their personal lives but in the creation of their submissions. Everyone who enters will receive a contest T-shirt, while top entries will win scholarships and prizes, including:
- 1st Place: $2,5000 scholarship and a MacBook
- 2nd Place: Apple iPad
- 3rd Place: Apple iPod
Due March 29, 2013, the contest is open to all students attending an accredited high school located within the boundaries of Salt Lake City. Submissions may include computer generated-artwork, paintings, drawings or photographs, with text in English or Spanish. All entries must reflect the anti-drug theme of the contest, and they must be sized at 22 inches by 28 inches, a standard poster-board size.
The top 25 semi-finalists will be exhibited in an art show coinciding with the May Gallery Stroll, at which time a panel of judges will select the top entries and award scholarships and prizes. Download contest guidelines and entry forms at www.police.slc.gov/StudentArt.
The Police Department wishes to thank the Salt Lake Film Society for its support of the Student Art Contest. Winning entries from last year are “now playing” between movie screenings at the Society’s Broadway Centre Cinemas, 111 E. Broadway, Salt Lake City.
