Activity details: burglars are checking windows and doors, not giving up until they find one that is open or unlocked. Review the following safety tips to decrease the likelihood of becoming a victim of crime.
- Be aware: Regardless of the time of day, watch for strangers walking slowly around your neighborhood, looking into cars, trying car doors, even knocking on doors when you know the neighbors are at work or out of town.
- Lock it up: Do not leave any property that is, or looks, valuable in cars or yards. Lock windows and doors, and close garage doors — even while home.
- Take notes: Write down details about a subject’s appearance, car or other identifying characteristics and share it with police.
- Call police: If it’s an emergency or a crime in progress, call 911. In a non-emergency, call (801) 799-3000. For chronic public safety issues in your neighborhood, contact your CIU Officer.
- Text it: Tipsters may remain anonymous. Send a text to 274637. Start the message with the keyword TIPSLCPD, which routes the information to the correct law enforcement agency. Attach photos if you have them.
The Community Intelligence Unit works with the public to solve chronic public safety issues at the grassroots level. CIU Officers attend monthly community council meetings within the City’s seven City Council Districts in order to share and receive information.
