December 2, 2013SALT LAKE CITY — Shortly after 11 p.m. Friday, November 29, Salt Lake City Police officers responded to 164 S. 900 W. on a report of a man experiencing a mental health crisis and threatening to burn down his home.
Upon arriving at the man’s apartment complex, the officers attempted to make contact with him, but he refused to come outside. Smelling natural gas, they entered the residence to secure the safety of the man and other residents.
Once inside, the subject was found to be in possession of an object officers believed to be a knife. He lunged at one of the officers, who fired once.
The man was transported to a local hospital. He is expected to recover.
Per department policy, the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal review of such an incident. Simultaneous investigations are under way by both the Salt Lake City Police Department and the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office.
