SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department is visiting city high schools this month to launch its annual “kNOw more … kNOw DRUGS” Student Art Contest.

“This contest is designed to create an anti-drug message that teens will listen to, as well as reward the artists and encourage their higher education goals,” Chief Burbank said. “Thanks to funding from the Salt Lake City Police Foundation, this year we have the funding to take an entry and turn it into a public service announcement that will play in local movie theaters. Now that’s win-win.”

School Resource Officers will visit classes to talk about the state of drug use and abuse in Salt Lake City, providing insight that students may find valuable not only in their personal lives but in the creation of entries for the contest. All qualifying entries will receive a contest T-shirt, while top entries will be eligible for a scholarship and other prizes*, including:

  • 1st Place: $2,500 scholarship and a MacBook
  • 2nd Place: Apple iPad
  • 3rd Place: Apple iPad mini
  • 4th Place: iPod Touch
  • Honorable Mention: Digital camera
  • Fan Favorite: iPad mini

Due March 31, 2014, the contest is open to all students attending a high school located within the boundaries of Salt Lake City. Submissions may include computer generated-artwork, paintings, drawings or photographs, with text in English or Spanish. All entries must reflect the anti-drug nature of the contest, and they must be sized at 22 inches by 28 inches, a standard poster-board size.

The top 25 semi-finalists will be exhibited in an art show in April, at which time a panel of judges will select the top entries. Download contest guidelines and entry forms at www.police.slc.gov/StudentArt.

The Police Department would like to thank the Salt Lake Film Society for its support of the Student Art Contest. Winning entries from last year are “now playing” between movie screenings at the Society’s Broadway Centre Cinemas. Other sponsors include the Salt Lake City Police Foundation and the Art Institute of Salt Lake.
