SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police and Fire Departments invite the public to mark the debut of a new police and fire museum with a special ribbon cutting and open house Tuesday afternoon at the Public Safety Building.

Located in the building’s lobby, the museum showcases the evolution of the public safety agencies over the course of their combined 293 years of service to the community. Historic items in the permanent exhibit include:

  • “The Volunteer,” built in 1853 and the first manually-operated water pump west of the Mississippi.
  • 2 SLCPD motorcycles from different service periods
  • Utah’s first fire alarm
  • Documents from several high-profile police investigations
  • Olympic torch and coats worn by officers, firefighters during 2002 Winter Games
  • A wall of honor for fallen police officers, many featuring personal items donated by family members
  • Panels highlighting specific incidents in which firefighters made the ultimate sacrifice while serving Salt Lake City

Following a ribbon cutting and brief remarks at 3 p.m., museum committee members will be on hand to answer questions and talk about the collection until 6 p.m.
