April 1, 2016SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department has been awarded a $15,000 grant from the Utah Highway Safety Office of the Utah Department of Public Safety. As a part of the grant the Salt Lake City Police Department will be conducting crosswalk enforcement, cyclist and motorist enforcement, bike safety rodeos and will distribute free helmets, bicycle lights and visibility gear.
Bicyclists and pedestrians are involved in accidents every year. According to the Utah Department of Public Safety Highway Safety Office there was a yearly average of 839 bicycle/motor vehicle collisions and 909 pedestrians struck by motor vehicles from 2011 to 2013. This grant is a great way to increase our opportunities to educate the community and increase safety on and near the roadways.
