SLCPD Issues Statement on Officer-Involved-Critical-Incident

SALT LAKE CITY — Tonight, the Salt Lake City Police Department invoked the Officer-Involved-Critical-Incident Protocol (OICI) following a shooting with an armed carjacking suspect.

This investigation started at 5:47 p.m. on Saturday, March 26, 2022 when SLC911 received information about a man attempting to carjack a vehicle near 600 South and Interstate 15 in downtown.

After unsuccessfully carjacking one vehicle, the suspect successfully carjacked another using a firearm. Officers located the suspect in the stolen vehicle. The officers attempted a traffic stop, but the suspect fled through the city to the area of 220 South Orange Street. At some point, shots were exchanged between the suspect and two officers. The man died on scene.

“Tonight, two of our officers found themselves facing great danger as they protected our community. I am grateful for their heroic actions,” said SLCPD Chief Mike Brown. “Our police officers reacted quickly and professionally to a public safety threat. Their actions demonstrated great courage and likely prevented any further injuries or violence in our community.”

There are no reported injuries to the officers or victims involved in both carjackings.

As standard procedure and in accordance with department policy and state law, the SLCPD invoked the OICI Protocol. OICI Protocol Team 3 is leading the investigation.

The two officers involved in the shooting are now on paid administrative leave, which is standard department procedure.
