SLCPD Arrest Man Who Tried to ‘Drive-Stun’ Officers With Personal Electrical Device
SALT LAKE CITY — Today, patrol officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department arrested a man after he allegedly stole a vehicle and then attempted to use a personal electrical device to ‘drive-stun’ officers.
This investigation began on April 20, 2022, at 7:52 a.m. after a community member called 9-1-1 and reported witnessing a man steal her vehicle.
Officers responded to the area of 800 South and 400 West and started looking for the vehicle.
Officers found the stolen vehicle near 980 South State Street with a man still inside.
Officers attempted to arrest the suspect but he refused to comply and immediately ran away.
During a brief foot chase, the man reached into a pocket and pulled out a personal electrical device and attempted to ‘drive-stun’ officers.
Officers safely took the suspect into custody, although he remained physically non-compliant throughout their interactions.
A ‘drive-stun’ occurs when an electrical device makes contact with a person’s body and delivers a non-lethal amount of electrical shock to temporarily incapacitate a person.
No officers were injured. Officers seized the personal electrical device as evidence.
The suspect refused to give his name to officers.
The man is being evaluated at a local hospital for minor injuries.
Once medically cleared, officers will transport the man to the Salt Lake County Metro Jail where he will be booked accordingly.
The stolen vehicle did not appear to be damaged and was given back to the registered owner.
Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
A photo of the personal electrical device and the stolen vehicle are being released.
There is no other information about this case to release at this time.
