SLCPD Investigating Deadly Hit and Run Crash, Suspect Arrested
SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department is investigating a traffic-related crash that killed a woman and injured a child.
This investigation started at 11:26 a.m. on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, when SLC911 received information about a crash involving a vehicle and two people near 900 East 1700 South.
Based on the preliminary information, the suspect vehicle was traveling east on 1700 South when it left the roadway and hit the woman and child as they were on the sidewalk.
Officers and paramedics located the victims and performed life-saving efforts.
While being transported to an area hospital, the woman died.
Paramedics transported the child to an area hospital in critical condition.
The driver of the involved vehicle did not stop and drove away.
Responding officers immediately began searching for the suspect and his vehicle. Officers located the driver and suspect vehicle nearby and safely took the man into custody.
1700 South will be closed from 900 East to 1000 East for the next several hours.
This crash marks the 11th traffic-related fatality in Salt Lake City for 2022.
The Crash Analysis Reconstruction (CAR) Team and SLCPD Crime Lab technicians responded to the scene.
The CAR Team is a multi-jurisdictional crash team that investigates crashes involving serious physical injuries or death. Members of the CAR Team receive specialized training in collision examination, speed analysis, vehicle dynamics, occupant kinematics, scene photography, surveying equipment, crash scene mapping, evidence collection and computer aided drawing programs.
The CAR Team includes law enforcement from the Salt Lake City Police Department and several other Salt Lake Valley law enforcement agencies.
No information about the woman and child are being released at this time.
The man’s identity will not be released unless and until he is booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail.
An SLCPD PIO responded to the scene to provide media with updates.
A photo taken of the scene is being released.
