Update: SLCPD Arrest Driver in Fatal Hit and Run Crash

SALT LAKE CITY — Today, detectives assigned to the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Crash Analysis Reconstruction (CAR) Team arrested 53-year-old Jack Archibald, of West Valley City, in connection to a deadly hit and run crash.

Officers will book Archibald into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on one count of Automobile Homicide, two counts of Driving Under the Influence, and two counts of Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving a Fatality.

This investigation started at 11:26 a.m. on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, when SLC911 received information about a crash involving a vehicle and two people near 900 East 1700 South.

During the investigation detectives learned Archibald was driving a vehicle, while impaired, east on 1700 South near 900 East when he swerved through oncoming traffic lanes and onto the sidewalk, striking 23-year-old Libbie Isabel Allan and her daughter.

Allan died while being transported to the hospital.

The name and age of the child is not being released. She remains at an area hospital in critical condition. The family is requesting privacy and does not want to be contacted by media.

After the initial crash, Archibald’s vehicle traveled through the front yard of a residence and knocked over a metal fence. Archibald did not stop and continued to drive away from the scene.

A short time after the crash, officers conducting an area check located Archibald and the involved vehicle near the Forest Dale Golf Course. Officers found Archibald inside a shed.

Arresting officers noted Archibald smelled very strongly of an alcoholic beverage.

This crash marks the 11th traffic-related fatality in Salt Lake City for 2022.

The CAR Team and SLCPD Crime Lab technicians responded to the scene.

The CAR Team is a multi-jurisdictional crash team that investigates crashes involving serious physical injuries or death. Members of the CAR Team receive specialized training in collision examination, speed analysis, vehicle dynamics, occupant kinematics, scene photography, surveying equipment, crash scene mapping, evidence collection and computer aided drawing programs.

The CAR Team includes law enforcement from the Salt Lake City Police Department and several other Salt Lake Valley law enforcement agencies.

An SLCPD PIO responded to the scene to provide media with updates.

No further information on this case is being released. Neither the PIO nor the On-Duty Watch Commander are available for interviews.
