SLCPD SWAT Team Assists Officers Investigating Sexual Assault Case

SALT LAKE CITY — Today, members of the Salt Lake City Police Department’s SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiators responded to a home on 1700 North near Cavallo Drive to help with a sexual assault investigation.

This investigation started at 11:59 a.m. on May 16, 2022 when SLC911 received information about a sexual assault that had just occurred involving a juvenile. This was not a stranger-on-stranger assault.

As officers responded to the scene, they received information that the suspect had access to multiple firearms.

Officers arrived on scene and learned a single shot had been heard.

While on scene, officers learned that at least one person was inside the residence.

The on-scene incident commander requested the assistance of SLCPD SWAT and crisis negotiators. These highly trained teams provide patrol officers with additional resources.

SLCPD School Resources Officers worked with nearby Northwest Middle School and had the school placed on lockdown.

Several homeowners in the area were told to shelter in place.

At the request of SLCPD, paramedics and firefighters were asked to be in the area to assist with any medical needs.

At 1:09 p.m. SWAT officers entered the garage, the last known location of the suspect, and located him deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Detectives with the SLCPD Special Victims Unit have responded to the scene to investigate the initial sexual assault and to help the victim.

All lock down and shelter in place orders have been lifted.

Because this case involves a minor and sexual assault, no other information is being released, including the specific address, ages of any party involved or names.
