SLCPD Detectives Book Homicide Suspect into Jail
SALT LAKE CITY — Detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Homicide Squad have booked a man into jail in connection with the murder of 40-year-old Robert Barros. On Tuesday June 7, 2022, members of law enforcement located and later arrested 41-year-old Jared Lance. SLCPD detectives booked Lance into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges of Murder, Possession of a Dangerous Weapon by a Restricted Person and Obstruction of Justice. This investigation started at 11:43 a.m. on Sunday, May 29, 2022 when SLC911 received information about a shooting in the area of 1790 South West Temple Street. Officers arrived on scene and found Barros with at least one gunshot wound. Officers performed immediate life-saving efforts. During this investigation, officers and detectives learned Barros was driving a silver car shortly before his death. He pulled into a parking lot off of West Temple Street and immediately parked his car. Later, a white car, which detectives believe was being driven by Lance, pulled into the same parking lot and blocked Barros’ car from leaving. Lance, wearing all black, is accused of getting out of the white car and shooting Barros. After allegedly shooting Barros, Lance is accused of getting into Barros’ car, stealing it and driving away. The second person in the white car got into the driver’s seat and drove away. No information about the other driver can be released. This investigation remains ongoing. Detectives later located both cars. Inside the car Lance initially arrived in, detectives located his cell phone and his identification card. That car was located near the scene of the homicide. Detectives later located Barros’ car abandoned in Kearns. Lance is accused of obstructing justice by destroying evidence related to this homicide investigation. Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. No further information on this case is being released. Neither the PIO nor the On-Duty Watch Commander are available for interviews. The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
