SLCPD Investigating Fatal Downtown Crash

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department is investigating a crash that killed a man downtown.

This investigation started at 4:33 p.m. on Thursday, July 14, 2022 when SLC911 received information about a crash involving a moped and a car near 555 East 400 South in downtown Salt Lake City.

Responding officers and paramedics arrived and located the man operating the moped and provided immediate life-saving efforts but the driver died on scene.

The occupants in the other car were not injured and are cooperating with the investigation.

Officers secured the crash scene and called out the Crash Analysis Reconstruction (CAR) Team.

Based on the preliminary information, detectives believe the driver of the moped crashed into the car while traveling westbound on the sidewalk on 400 South. The car was stopped, waiting to turn westbound onto 400 South out of the business.

This crash marks the 18th traffic-related fatality in Salt Lake City for 2022.

The Crash Analysis Reconstruction (CAR) Team and SLCPD Crime Lab technicians responded to the scene.

The CAR Team is a multi-jurisdictional crash team that investigates crashes involving serious physical injuries or death. Members of the CAR Team receive specialized training in collision examination, speed analysis, vehicle dynamics, occupant kinematics, scene photography, surveying equipment, crash scene mapping, evidence collection and computer aided drawing programs.

The CAR Team includes law enforcement from the Salt Lake City Police Department and several other Salt Lake Valley law enforcement agencies.

A PIO responded to the scene and provided media with regular updates.

The identity and age of the man will not be released until next-of-kin notifications are made.
