SLCPD Investigating Two Separate Crashes, One Man Dead

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department is continuing to investigate two, separate crashes where one man died and a 50-year-old man remains in critical condition.

The first crash investigation began at 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday, August 2, 2022 when patrol officers were flagged down by witnesses reporting a crash between a car and motorcycle near Main Street and Merrimac Avenue.

Officers responded to the scene and located an unresponsive man in the roadway.

Officers and paramedics immediately performed life-saving measures on the man before being transported to a local hospital in critical  condition.

The driver of the car remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation.

While speaking with the 23-year-old driver, officers observed signs of impairment and are looking into whether impairment played a factor in the crash.

Based on the preliminary information, detectives believe the motorcycle attempted to pass the car while the car was changing lanes southbound on Main Street.

Because of the seriousness of the crash, the Crash Analysis Reconstruction (CAR) Team and Crime Lab Technicians responded to assist with the investigation.

There is no other information to release about this crash.

The second crash investigation started at 9:46 p.m. on August 2, 2022, after SLC911 received multiple calls about a person on a skateboard who had been hit by a car at the intersection of 700 East 300 South.

Paramedics arrived on scene and performed immediate life-saving efforts, but the man died on scene.

Responding officers immediately secured the intersection and requested the assistance of the Crash Analysis (CAR) Team.

The driver of the car remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

Detectives with the CAR Team and Crime Lab technicians also responded to this crash investigation.

Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives believe the skateboarder was crossing the street against the traffic light and was hit by the car.

The age and identity of the man will not be released until next of kin notifications are made.

There are no other details that can be released about this fatal crash.

The 300 East 700 South crash marks the 20th traffic-related fatality in Salt Lake City for 2022.

The CAR Team is a multi-jurisdictional crash team that investigates crashes involving serious physical injuries or death. Members of the CAR Team receive specialized training in collision examination, speed analysis, vehicle dynamics, occupant kinematics, scene photography, surveying equipment, crash scene mapping, evidence collection and computer aided drawing programs.

The CAR Team includes law enforcement from the Salt Lake City Police Department and several other Salt Lake Valley law enforcement agencies.
