SLCPD Investigating Serious Injury Crash Involving 2 People, 5 CarsSALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department is continuing to investigate a crash that resulted in one person being trapped under a car. This investigation started at 3:21 p.m. when community members flagged down a Salt Lake City Police officer near 450 South 400 West and reported a traffic crash. The initial officer located one person, a 66-year-old man, pinned under a car. Emergency medical personnel with Salt Lake City Fire and Gold Cross responded. After being removed, Gold Cross took the man to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. At the hospital, doctors upgraded his condition to critical but stable. Based on the preliminary investigation, the driver of a commercial-sized delivery truck, while driving south on 400 West, lost control of the truck and crashed into four parked cars. The impact of the crash pinned the 66-year-old man and injured another person. Gold Cross took the second victim to the hospital with non-critical injuries. The driver of the truck remained on scene. SLCPD is investigating whether the driver had a medical episode prior to the crash. Gold Cross took the delivery truck driver to the hospital to be checked on. Due to the circumstances of the crash, the Crash Analysis Reconstruction (CAR) Team and SLCPD Crime Lab technicians responded to the scene. The CAR Team is a multi-jurisdictional crash team that investigates crashes involving serious physical injuries or death. Members of the CAR Team receive specialized training in collision examination, speed analysis, vehicle dynamics, occupant kinematics, scene photography, surveying equipment, crash scene mapping, evidence collection and computer aided drawing programs. The CAR Team includes law enforcement from the Salt Lake City Police Department and several other Salt Lake Valley law enforcement agencies. No arrests or citations have been made. The investigation is still in the preliminary stages. A SLCPD Public Information Officer responded to the scene to provide community members and media updates.
