SLCPD Activates Officer-Involved-Critical-Incident Protocol

SALT LAKE CITY — Today, the Salt Lake City Police Department activated the officer-involved-critical-incident (OICI) protocol after a suspect died at the hospital after being taken into custody.

The suspect who died is a man, but his name and age are not yet confirmed. Those details will be released after next-of-kin notification is complete.

Statements in this release are based on a preliminary review of limited information available at the time of this writing. A thorough investigation is being conducted by an outside agency, pursuant to the OICI protocol.

“I want to reassure Salt Lake City that the women and men of the Salt Lake City Police Department are professionals who have pledged to protect our community. During this incident, two of our city’s police officers were hurt. I’m grateful those injuries were not more serious,” said Chief Mike Brown. “The officer-involved-critical-incident protocol provides an independent, transparent, and objective process.”

Based on the preliminary information, at 3:15 p.m. on Sunday August 14, 2022, a business located near 300 West 800 South, called SLC911 and reported an attempted theft and disturbance involving the suspect.

The suspect left the business and officers located him around 356 West 700 South.

While on 700 South, the suspect fought with officers. During the fight, two SLCPD officers were hurt. The officers’ injuries were significant but are non-life threatening.

After being taken into custody, the suspect lost consciousness. Officers performed medical aid, including chest compressions and administered naloxone.

Gold Cross took the suspect to the hospital in critical condition.

The suspect died at the hospital.

This investigation is being led by OICI Protocol Team #4.

Body-worn camera video associated with this incident will be released consistent with Salt Lake City ordinance 2.10.200.
