SLCPD Officers Arrest Stabbing Suspect

SALT LAKE CITY — This afternoon, officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department arrested a 21-year-old man accused of stabbing a 30-year-old man.

This incident does not appear to be a random assault.

The investigation started at 4:50 p.m. on Friday August 19, 2022, when SLC911 received information about a person bleeding at Pioneer Park.

Officers responded and located the victim inside the park with a stab wound. Officers rendered first aid.

Additional officers started checking the park for evidence, witnesses and the suspect.

Community members directed officers to a man walking through the park.

Officers stopped the man, later identified as Mahat Osman, and took him into custody.

Gold Cross transported the victim to the hospital in serious but stable condition.

Gold Cross also transported the suspect to the hospital for minor injuries that occurred prior to arrest.

Doctors have since released Osman and SLCPD officers are in the process of booking him into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail.

Osman will be charged with one count of aggravated assault.

Based on the preliminary investigation, it appears this was an isolated incident between Osman and the victim.

Witnesses told officers the two men were in a verbal argument just before the stabbing occurred.

SLCPD officer searched the park and located a knife.

The SLCPD Crime Lab Unit responded to document the scene and collect evidence.

A SLCPD Public Information Officer responded to the scene to provide media updates.

No further updates are available currently.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
