SLCPD Hazardous Devices Unit Responds to “Suspicious Circumstance” Near I-15SALT LAKE CITY — Today, officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s SWAT Team and Hazardous Devices Unit (HDU) responded to investigate a suspicious circumstance. This investigation started at 3:10 p.m. on August 29, 2022, when SLC911 received information about a van parked underneath the Interstate 15 overpass on 200 South. The caller told SLC911 that the van had “wires” coming out of it. SLCPD patrol officers established a safety perimeter around the van and worked to confirm details about the incident. Members from the SLCPD SWAT Team and HDU responded to help with the investigation. SLCPD requested the assistance of the Utah Highway Patrol and the Utah Transit Authority. At 3:50 p.m., SLCPD safely took a person into custody as part of the ongoing investigation. The person taken into custody remained fully cooperative with the investigation. Once HDU confirmed there was no public safety threat, the man was immediately released. The Salt Lake City Police Department extends its appreciation to community members impacted by this incident. Out of an abundance of caution, officers appropriately established a large safety perimeter, which impacted all forms of ground transportation. Officers quickly broke down the safety perimeter after the incident command gave the all-clear. Several photos from the scene have been posted to the SLCPD’s Twitter page. The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Hazardous Devices Unit is a member of Utah’s statewide Bomb Response Task Force and is accredited by the FBI. In addition to members from the Salt Lake City Police Department, the unit is supported by FBI-certified bomb technicians from the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Airport Division and the University of Utah Police Department. Members of the squad are very experienced with live incidents and have extensive training in render-safe procedures, explosive destruction, blast mitigation, and post-blast investigation. The Hazardous Devices Unit has full bomb and explosive recovery response capabilities, utilizing all the latest equipment and technology. A SLCPD Public Information Officer responded to the scene to provide community members and media updates. ### |
