SLCPD Recovers 3 Guns, Heroin, Cocaine & Oxycodone Pills

SALT LAKE CITY — Recently, officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Liberty Bike Squad arrested two people and recovered three firearms and several illegal drugs.

This investigation started at 1:59 p.m., on Monday, August 22, 2022 when officers stopped a car near 275 West Paxton Avenue after seeing the driver, identified as 20-year-old Aumhil Stewart.

Officers knew from prior interactions that Stewart’s license to drive was revoked.

Officers also spoke with the passenger, identified as 22-year-old Daisy Benitez.

Prior to being impounded, officers conducted an inventory of the car.

During the inventory, officers located three guns – two handguns and one shotgun. Officers discovered one of the handguns to be stolen.

Officers also recovered several illegal drugs – consisting of suspected heroin, cocaine, and oxycodone pills.

“Every day, in every area of Salt Lake City, our officers continue to keep the community safe by taking illegally possessed guns like these off of our streets,” said SLCPD Chief Mike Brown. “This is just one of the many examples of proactive policing our officers do to help reduce violent crime.”

Officers booked Stewart into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on three counts of Possession of a Dangerous Weapon by a Restricted Person, Theft by Receiving Stolen Property, three counts of Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Driving on Revocation.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.

Photos of the guns and illegal drugs recovered are being released.
