SLCPD Concentrated Patrol Effort Results in 2 Arrests in Liberty Patrol Division

SALT LAKE CITY — As part of an ongoing and coordinated effort to reduce crime and increase community safety, members of the Salt Lake City Police Department conducted a concentrated patrol effort in the Ballpark neighborhood.

This operation, held on Tuesday August 31, 2022, included patrol officers, detectives assigned to the SLCPD Property Crimes Squad and members of the SLCPD’s Liberty Bike Squad.

During the operation, SLCPD arrested 27-year-old Luis Caldwell for stealing a bike being tracked by SLCPD.

Additional officers focused their patrol efforts in two areas including Major Street and 300 West.

While patrolling the area, officers tried to stop 31-year-old Albert Crews. Instead of yielding, Crews took off in his car.

Crews circled the block and turned down several streets. Additional officers working the concentrated patrol effort found Crews after he turned down a dead-end street at East Wilson and South Edison.

Officers booked Crews into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges of Failing to Stop or Responding at the Command of a Police Officer, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Use or Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Interference with a Police Officer, Open Container in a Vehicle, and Driving without a Valid License.

During the concentrated patrol efforts, officers made more than 50 contacts with community members to ensure public safety and to continue building relationships with neighbors.

The Salt Lake City Police Department will continue to use crime analysis and mapping to assign officers to be highly visible to help deter street and violent crimes.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
