SLCPD Homicide Detectives Arrest Suspect in Murder Investigation

SALT LAKE CITY — Today, the Salt Lake City Police Department announced the arrest of a 22-year-old man as part of an ongoing murder investigation.

There are still other people wanted as part of this investigation, including the shooter.

This investigation started at 3:19 p.m. on Saturday September 3, 2022, when SLCPD responded to a shooting near 150 South West Temple Street.

With the assistance of the SLCPD’s SWAT Team, detectives with the SLCPD’s Homicide Squad arrested Deng Buk while executing a court-authorized search warrant in Salt Lake City.

Buk will be booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on one count of Murder and one count of Aggravated Robbery.

Detectives continue to ask anyone with information about this case to call 801-799-3000.

Detectives have confirmed the victim, 41-year-old Delford Knight, and his friends flew to Salt Lake City from Florida to attend a sneaker convention at the Salt Palace Convention Center.

According to information provided to detectives, Knight and his friends have traveled to similar conventions in different states where they engaged in betting matches to defraud people out of money.

It is alleged one of the suspects lost money to Knight and became angry. The suspects followed Knight out onto West Temple.

While on West Temple, Buk and the other suspects started fighting with Knight and tried to get back the lost money.

At some point, a person with Buk took out a gun and shot Knight.

It is further alleged the shooter and another suspect took items out of Knight’s pockets, including a cell phone and cash. The suspects all left the area.

Knight died at a local hospital.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

No further information on this case is being released. Neither the PIO nor the On-Duty Watch Commander are available for interviews.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
