SLCPD School Resource Officers Detain 2 Students, Recover 2 Guns at Highland HS

SALT LAKE CITY — Today, School Resource Officers (SROs) with the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) safely detained two Highland High School students and recovered two guns on campus.

This investigation started at 10:24 a.m. on Monday September 26, 2022, when Highland High School administrators contacted SLCPD SROs about a student they stopped as part of a separate criminal and administrative investigation.

During their contact with the student, school employees found a handgun in the student’s bag.

As part of the investigation, the SLCPD SROs contacted a second student and located a second gun in that person’s bag.

Both firearms have been secured by SLCPD SROs.

There is no threat to the school or community.

The preliminary investigation shows the two students – who are brothers – brought the guns to school as a status symbol. No threats were ever made.

Out of an abundance of caution, SLCPD SROs and patrol officers searched the school and neighborhood.

The SLCPD thanks the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for their prompt assistance with this investigation.

During the investigation, school administrators placed the high school on “secure alert.”

Both students detained will be booked into a Salt Lake County Juvenile Detention Center.

A SLCPD PIO responded to the scene to provide community members and media updates.

Because this case involves minors, the name, ages and grades of the students involved are not being released.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for adult jail booking photos.
