SLCPD Investigating Gang-Related Shooting; Teenager Shot, Firearm Recovered

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department is investigating a gang-related shooting that injured a 14-year-old female.

This investigation started around 6 p.m. on Thursday October 6, 2022, when officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department, while on an unrelated call, heard sounds of gunfire near Meadows Community Park, located at 1920 West 400 North.

The officers alerted police dispatchers to the situation and asked for help from available patrol officers.

As officers spoke with neighbors to confirm the exact location of the shooting, SLC911 alerted the officers about multiple 9-1-1 calls coming in about a shooting that just occurred.

Officers responded to 500 North New Star Drive and located a 14-year-old female with a gunshot wound. Before paramedics and firefighters could arrive, family members of the victim took her up to a local hospital on their own.

Officers went to the hospital and confirmed the victim’s injuries were not life-threatening.

Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives are treating this as a gang-related shooting. Just prior to the shooting, witnesses told police two young men – both under the age of 18 – got into a fight over an unknown reason.

At some point after the fight, someone likely associated with one of the young men showed up and fired several rounds. At this time, it’s unclear whether the shooter targeted the victim or if she was a bystander.

After the shooting, several people involved ran away.

SLCPD patrol officers, the SLCPD Gang Unit and a SLCPD K9 bloodhound responded to the scene to help search for the suspects.

Officers found one of the suspects, who jumped over a large wall, in the 200-block of North Cornell Street. Officers safely took the suspect into custody and found a gun.

Officers could not find the other suspect. His identity is known to detectives, and they are continuing their investigation.

The one suspect in custody will likely be booked into a Salt Lake County Juvenile Detention Center later this evening.

The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Gang Unit is responsible for investigating gang-related crimes that occur within the city’s jurisdiction. The unit consists of highly trained uniformed officers and detectives who work collaboratively with patrol divisions and other specialty squads within the SLCPD to gather information and focus on preventing gang and gun violence through education, prevention and enforcement.
