SLCPD Officers Safely Arrest Man with Gun inside High Rise Apartment Building

SALT LAKE CITY — Today, officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department safely arrested a 33-year-old man in possession of a firearm while he was inside a high-rise apartment complex in the Sugar House neighborhood.

“This was a very dynamic situation that presented numerous challenges and I’m proud of the women and men of the Salt Lake City Police Department,” said Chief Mike Brown. “They handled this call with incredible professionalism. This type of situation puts our officers under enormous stress, but they are highly trained. Today, like they do every day, our officers relied on their training and experience to safely resolve this incident to ensure the community outside and those living inside the apartment dwelling remained safe.”

This investigation started at 12 p.m. on Sunday October 9, 2022, when SLC911 alerted SLCPD officers, who were already on scene at 2191 South McClelland Street for an unrelated call, about a disturbance inside the Sugarmont Apartment building.

When officers spoke with people living at the apartment complex, they told officers they heard at least one gunshot from one of the top floors.

Officers on scene immediately called for additional police units to respond and began setting up a large safety zone outside the apartment due to the suspect’s elevated position over the Fairmont Aquatic Center. Officers told people to leave the area and people in the apartment complex to shelter in place.

The SLCPD requested Gold Cross and the Salt Lake City Fire Department to respond and stage nearby.

Officers located the suspect’s apartment unit and started attempts to communicate with him.

During the investigation, officers learned the suspect pointed his gun at least one person.

Because of that, detectives are investigating this incident as an aggravated assault. That investigation is still ongoing.

The suspect exited his apartment unit while holding a gun. Officers immediately ordered the man to drop the weapon and surrender peacefully.

Officers took the man into custody.

Because the suspect claimed someone else was inside the apartment unit, officers performed an emergency safety sweep to check for anyone else.

Officers confirmed the apartment was empty.

During the arrest, officers seized the suspect’s gun.

As part of the investigation, detectives are in the process of obtaining a court-authorized search warrant to determine whether there were any other firearms inside the apartment and to determine whether the suspect shot his weapon.

There were no injuries associated to this incident.

All street closures and shelter-in-place orders were lifted at 1:13 p.m. on October 9, 2022.

The Salt Lake City Police Department appreciates the community’s assistance and patience during this tactical incident.

The suspect’s name will be released only after he is booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
