SLCPD SWAT Team, Crisis Negotiators Safely Resolve Domestic Violence IncidentSALT LAKE CITY — Today, Salt Lake City Police officers, with the assistance of the SLCPD SWAT Team, safely arrested a 29-year-old man accused of assaulting his roommate and then barricading himself inside his home. The suspect in this case is identified as 38-year-old Nicholas Waitkevich. Waitkevich will be booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail for Domestic Violence Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Kidnapping, Domestic Violence in the Presence of a Child, and Obstruction. This investigation started around 7:45 a.m. on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, when SLC911 got a call about a domestic violence assault at a home near 1100 East Zenith Avenue. Once patrol officers arrived, they surrounded the house and tried talking with the people inside of the home, including Waitkevich During the investigation, officers learned everyone inside the home knew each other. A 38-year-old man eventually came out and told officers Waitkevich assaulted him. Gold Cross Ambulance took the 38-year-old to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries allegedly caused by Waitkevich. Officers continued their attempts to get everyone to peacefully surrender. Out of an abundance of caution, officers told people in the immediate area to stay inside. The Salt Lake City Fire Department and a Gold Cross Ambulance staged as a precaution. The on-scene incident commander requested the assistance of SLCPD SWAT and Crisis Negotiators. These highly trained teams provide patrol officers with additional resources. The crisis negotiation team includes social workers who also responded. After getting a court-authorized search warrant, members of the SLCPD SWAT Team safely entered the home and took Waitkevitch into custody. Officers found two other people in the home and their involvement is still being figured out. Waitkevich and the two other people did not have any injuries. Detectives with the SLCPD Domestic Violence Squad responded to continue the investigation. Four photos from the scene are included. A SLCPD PIO responded to the scene to provide media and community members updates. No further information on this case is being released. Neither the PIO nor the On-Duty Watch Commander is available for additional interviews.
