SLCPD Arrest 37-Year-Old Man for Murder Following Weekend Shooting

SALT LAKE CITY — Overnight, the Salt Lake City Police Department, working in collaboration with the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, safely arrested 37-year-old Dustin Pedersen for the murder of 29-year-old Nichole Olsen.

This investigation started at 2 a.m. on Sunday November 20, 2022, when SLC911 received a call about an incident at 300 South West Temple.

The 9-1-1 caller later reported someone was shot. SLC911 call takers worked quickly to gather as much information to relay to SLCPD officers.

As officers responded, they learned someone put the victim in a car and started driving to a hospital on the University of Utah campus.

During the investigation, detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Homicide Squad learned Olsen spent part of her evening at a nightclub downtown with her boyfriend. At some point, a group of people – including Pedersen – got into an argument with Olsen’s boyfriend. Security asked Pedersen and his friend to leave the nightclub. Olsen and her boyfriend remained inside the nightclub until it closed.

Later, while parked in a parking lot near 300 West South Temple, the two groups ran into each other and a second argument occurred, which turned into a physical fight between Pedersen’s friend and Olsen’s boyfriend.

The driver of a dark-colored BMW later determined to be Pedersen, kept reaching into his waistband, according to information learned during the investigation.

After the shooting, Pedersen and his friend got into the BMW and left.

Detectives used surveillance video from the scene and confirmed Pedersen had recently purchased a dark-colored BMW.

On Monday November 21, 2022, the SLCPD Homicide Squad got a phone call from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office who reported Pedersen wanted to turn himself in and that he was driving a dark-colored BMW.

According to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, Pedersen told them he fired a single round from his gun to scare people off during the fight inside the parking lot.

Deputies secured the gun Pedersen had in his trunk that he reported was used in the shooting.

Detectives with the SLCPD Homicide Squad booked Pedersen into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on a single count of Murder.

This is the 14^th homicide in Salt Lake City for 2022.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
