SLCPD Reminds Community Members to Stay Alert in School ZonesSALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department is reminding community members to stay alert near school zones after a truck hit two school-aged children while in a crosswalk. This investigation started at 7:25 a.m. on Friday, January 13, 2023 when a driver called SLC911 and reported hitting two children near 1700 South 700 East. The Salt Lake City Fire Department treated the children on scene for non-life-threatening injuries. Gold Cross Ambulance took the children to the hospital for further evaluation. Officers met with the driver who is fully cooperating with the investigation. Based on the preliminary information, officers believe the children were crossing 1700 South in the crosswalk with the help of crossing guards when the driver, traveling eastbound on 1700 South turned northbound on 700 East and hit them in the crosswalk. The SLCPD reminds community members to stay alert when using roadways, especially in school zones and offers the following safety tips: ● When flashers are blinking, stop and yield to pedestrians crossing the crosswalk or intersection. ● Always stop for crossing guards. ● Take extra care to look out for children in school zones. ● Limit all potential distractions when using the roadway. Because they are children, no additional information about them is being released. Photos taken of the scene are being released.
