SLCPD Hazardous Devices Unit Safely Removes Dynamite from HomeSALT LAKE CITY — Recently, the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Hazardous Devices Unit (HDU) safely removed three sticks of dynamite from a home. This investigation started at 9:57 p.m. on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, when SLC911 took a call from a man reporting he found three sticks of old dynamite while cleaning out his attic near 200 South Iowa Street. While responding, officers learned the man moved the dynamite into an outside freezer. Officers responded, secured the area and blocked off the street, temporarily, for community safety. The on-duty watch commander requested the assistance of the SLCPD Hazardous Devices Unit. Detectives with the HDU team safely took the dynamite into their possession for further investigation. The SLCPD reminds community members to never touch or move anything that looks suspicious. Call 9-1-1 and follow instructions from the dispatcher. Two photos of the dynamite are being released. Media may use these photos with proper credit to the Salt Lake City Police Department. The HDU is a statewide coalition of law enforcement members who receive specialized training and certification in explosive device assessment, operations, mitigation, and removal. The HDU receives year-round training using national best practices. Additionally, the SLCPD members of the HDU provide training and support to law enforcement throughout Utah and the country. There is no other information available for release.
