SLCPD Provides Update on Stabbing Investigation, 1 Person in CustodySALT LAKE CITY — Today, the Salt Lake City Police Department announced the arrest of 26-year-old Ivy Chase Grant who is charged with one count of obstruction of justice related to the murder of 34-year-old Charles Alires. Grant is currently in the Salt Lake County Metro Jail. On Friday February 4, 2023, members of the Salt Lake City Police Department’s SWAT Team and Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT), working with the SLCPD Homicide Squad, located Grant at a residence near 300 East Kensington Avenue. Officers safely took Grant into custody. Members from the SLCPD’s Crime Lab, along with detectives, responded to the address for evidentiary reasons. The location of 43-year-old Taddy Avalon Jackman, the other suspect in this case, is not known. Detectives are continuing to ask for help finding him. If you know Jackman’s location, please call 9-1-1 immediately. Do not approach him. People with general information about Jackman’s recent activities and location should call 801-799-3000. This investigation started at 3:43 p.m. on Thursday February 2, 2023, when SLC911 received information about a stabbing at the Palmer Court apartments, located at 999 South Main Street. Officers arrived and found Alires in critical condition. Officers performed medical aid and requested further assistance from the Salt Lake City Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance. Alires died on scene. There is no information to indicate the stabbing was random. Detectives believe Grant has been lying about his involvement in the fight that led to the death of Alires. Furthermore, detectives are concerned that if released, Grant may help Jackman further his fugitive status. A photo of Jackman, previously released, is included with this press statement. Photo: 43-year-old Taddy Avalon Jackman Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The SLCPD Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) is a specialty unit within the department responsible for combating violent crime, by identifying and apprehending violent criminals and fugitives. This unit works under the SLCPD Special Operations Division but also works closely with the Investigations, Patrol and Data and Research divisions to identify and direct targeted enforcement of hot spot areas and areas of rising violent crime. No further information on this case is being released. Neither the PIO nor the On-Duty Watch Commander are available for interviews. The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
