SLCPD Graveyard Patrol Officers Recover Gun, Illegal Drugs

SALT LAKE CITY — Recently, graveyard patrol officers assigned to the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Pioneer Patrol Division arrested a 45-year-old woman and 49-year-old man accused of being in possession of illegal weapons and illegal drugs.

This investigation started at 3:10 a.m. on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, when SLC911 took a call from someone reporting suspicious activity in the parking lot of a closed business near 900 West North Temple Street.

Officers responded and spotted two people inside of a gray car.

While talking with the driver, Elsi Cornejo, officers recovered a large knife from inside of the car and a loaded gun from Cornejo’s pocket.

Officers determined Cornejo to be under the influence of illegal drugs, therefore restricting her from legally possessing any dangerous weapon.

The passenger, later identified as Larry Clubbs, initially refused to identify himself to officers.

Officers found a large folding knife, methamphetamine, and suspected fentanyl pills on Clubbs.

Officers learned Clubbs is a convicted felon, which prevents him from possessing any dangerous weapons.

During a search of the vehicle, officers recovered methamphetamine and a distributable amount of marijuana.

Officers booked Cornejo into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on one felony count of Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance, one misdemeanor count of Possession of a Dangerous Weapon by a Restricted Person, one felony count of Possession of a Firearm by a Restricted Person, one misdemeanor count of Possession of a Controlled Substance, one misdemeanor count of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, one misdemeanor count of Carrying a Concealed Firearm, one misdemeanor count of Criminal Trespass, and one felony count of Transporting Prohibited Items into a Correctional Facility.

Officers booked Clubbs into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on one count of felony Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance, one misdemeanor count of Possession of a Dangerous Weapon, one misdemeanor count of Failure to Disclose Identity, one misdemeanor count of Criminal Trespass, and two counts of felony Possession of a Controlled Substance.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
