SLCPD Arrests Man in Aggravated Robbery, Threats and Hit and Run Case

SALT LAKE CITY — This week, officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department booked a 42-year-old man into jail on multiple charges related to an aggravated robbery and hit and run investigation.

After being released from the hospital on March 16, 2023, officers booked Daniel Ferry into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges of Aggravated Robbery, Failure to Stop at the Command of Law Enforcement, Failure to Remain At Accident Involving Injury, and Fail to Notify Of Accident with Unattended Vehicle.

This investigation started at 10:20 a.m. on Tuesday March 14, 2023, when SLC911 received a call about a crash near 500 North and 1400 West. Officers got on scene and saw Ferry’s car crashed into a parked SUV.

Witnesses told officers the driver, later identified as Ferry, ran from the crash scene holding a knife.  The crash did not result in any injuries.

During the investigation, officers learned Ferry walked into a business near 1200 West North Temple. Ferry allegedly told people inside the business he assaulted his girlfriend and needed to get away. He also demanded a set of keys and left the business. Officers located and safely arrested Ferry. Paramedics took Ferry to the hospital for a self-inflicted neck injury.

Patrol supervisors contacted the SLCPD’s Homicide Squad after learning about Ferry’s claim. Detectives started an investigation and went to lengths to conduct welfare checks on people associated with Ferry to determine if any of them were in danger or injured. Detectives found no evidence to support Ferry’s claim that he assaulted someone.

While investigating the crash, officers noticed a potentially suspicious item inside Ferry’s car.  Out of an abundance of caution, the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Hazardous Device Unit (HDU) responded.  The HDU determined the area to be safe and the item did not pose any danger.

The HDU is a statewide coalition of law enforcement members who receive specialized training and certification in explosive device assessment, operations, mitigation, and removal. The HDU receives year-round training using national best practices. Additionally, the SLCPD members of the HDU provide training and support to law enforcement throughout Utah and the country.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
