SLCPD Investigating Two Separate Road Rage Incidents

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department is investigating two separate road rage incidents, including one where someone was shot and received non-life-threatening injuries.

The first investigation began at 7:58 a.m. on Tuesday April 4, 2023, when SLC911 received a call about an argument occurring between two drivers near 800 South West Temple Street.

Officers arrived and spoke with the victim and started looking for witnesses and evidence.

During the investigation, officers learned the suspect swerved across the road and pulled in front of the victim, blocking their car.

When the victim tried to leave, the suspect blocked the victim’s car a second time. The suspect then backed into the victim’s car. The victim was not injured.

Patrol officers identified the suspect and safely arrested him at a nearby business.

Officers took 40-year-old Thomas McGovern to the Salt Lake County Metro Jail and booked him on charges of Aggravated Assault, Hit and Run and Intoxication.

The second – and separate investigation – started at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday April 5, 2023, when SLC911 received a call about a shooting near 1967 South 300 West.

Officers responded and found a 37-year-old man with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

Salt Lake City Fire Department and SLCPD officers rendered aid to the man.

Gold Cross took the man to a local hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.

Officers secured the area, located witnesses and started searching for the suspect and any evidence.

Specific details of the road rage incident from Thursday are not being released, pursuant to the ongoing investigation.

These two road rage incidents appear to be isolated and unrelated events.  There does not appear to be any imminent danger to the community. Reports of road rage are uncommon in Salt Lake City.

SLCPD reminds community members that if you encounter an aggressive driver, remain calm, call 9-1-1, drive to a police station or other safe location and wait for officers.

If you witness aggressive driving, be a good witness and get as much information as you can and call 9-1-1.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
