SLCPD Officers and Detectives Arrest Two for Robbery and Kidnapping

SALT LAKE CITY — Patrol officers and detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Robbery & Violent Crimes Squad safely arrested a 20-year-old man and 35-year-old woman who are accused of aggravated robbery and kidnapping.

This investigation started at 11:54 p.m. on Thursday, May 25, 2023, when a man approached an officer and told him he had been robbed near 1100 South Redwood Road.

During the investigation, officers learned the victim was washing his car when a man and woman pointed a gun at him and demanded money. The victim did not have any money, so the man and woman forced the victim to go to an ATM and withdraw cash.

After getting the cash, the suspects let the victim go, then drove away in a BMW.

Approximately two hours after the victim first reported the robbery, an officer spotted the suspects exiting the BMW near 800 South and 900 West.

Officers safely arrested the two suspects, later identified as Fernando Cornejo and Rose Marie Coyt.

Officers obtained a court authorized search warrant for the suspect vehicle and found illegal drugs, cash and a firearm.

Officers booked Cornejo into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on one felony count of Aggravated Robbery, one felony count of Aggravated Kidnapping, one felony count of Possession of a Firearm by a Restricted Person, one misdemeanor count of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia as well as warrants.

Officers booked Coyt into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on one felony count of Aggravated Robbery, one felony count of Aggravated Kidnapping and one misdemeanor count of Possession of a Controlled Substance.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
