SLCPD Arrests Third Person Connected to June 9th ShootingSALT LAKE CITY — Detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Gang Unit arrested a third person connected to a gang-related shooting that involved more than 10 people, six guns, and approximately 50 rounds being fired. Detectives booked Christian Uriel Catemaxca-Trujillo, 18, into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on three felony counts of Possession of a Dangerous Weapon by a Restricted Person and 11 felony counts of Discharge of a Firearm. On Thursday, June 29, 2023, detectives located and safely arrested Catemaxca-Trujillo near 5400 South Redwood Road. With the assistance of the SLCPD SWAT team and detectives from the Violent Criminal Apprehension team, detectives secured Catemaxca-Trujillo’s residence near 4100 South Main Street and executed a court-authorized search warrant. Detectives recovered a handgun and shotgun. Catemaxca-Trujillo is accused of being involved in a shooting that injured a 16-year-old. That investigation started at 10:39 p.m. on June 9, 2023, when officers responded to 3292 South Richmond Street to investigate reports of shots fired. When officers arrived, they found several parked cars damaged by gun fire. While investigating the shooting, officers learned someone dropped off a 16-year-old at a local hospital with a gunshot wound to the foot that required emergency surgery. His injuries are not considered life-threatening. Detectives with the SLCPD’s Gang Unit responded to lead the investigation. Detectives have determined the Richmond Street shooting involved rival gang members. Officers found approximately 50 shell casings at the scene and have determined at least six firearms were used. Detectives continue to investigate the shooting on Richmond Street and believe there are people in our community with additional details about the case, including the identities of other suspects. Additional arrests and charges could result as the investigation continues. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call 801-799-3000 and reference case number 23-124114. A photo of the firearms seized is being released. Media may use this photo with credit to the Salt Lake City Police Department. Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos. The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Gang Unit is responsible for investigating gang-related crimes that occur within the city’s jurisdiction. The unit consists of highly trained uniformed officers and detectives who work collaboratively with patrol divisions and other specialty squads within the SLCPD to gather information and focus on preventing gang and gun violence through education, prevention, and enforcement. The SLCPD Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) is a specialty unit within the department responsible for combating violent crime, by identifying and apprehending violent criminals and fugitives. This unit works under the SLCPD Special Operations Division but also works closely with the Investigations, Patrol and Data and Research divisions to identify and direct targeted enforcement of hot spot areas and areas of rising violent crime. 1- A photo of a shotgun, handgun, and ammo recovered by SLCPD detectives (SLCPD photo | June 29, 2023). ### |
