SLCPD Investigating Deadly Hit & Run CrashSALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department is investigating a hit and run crash that killed a 61-year-old man. Although the preliminary investigation appears to indicate this may be an intentional act, the investigation is still ongoing. Detectives with the SLCPD’s Homicide Squad are assisting with the investigation. This investigation started at 1:15 a.m., on Monday, July 3, 2023, when SLC911 got a call about a crash involving a car and person riding a scooter near 1020 West 1000 North. Based on the preliminary information, detectives believe the driver may have intentionally hit the man on the scooter and left the scene without stopping. At this time, there is no suspect information or description about the driver’s car available. It is unknown if the driver and the man on the scooter knew each other. Officers and Salt Lake City Fire Department paramedics provided life-saving aid to the man who died on scene. Officers secured the intersection and immediately started looking for the car involved, which should have front-end damage. The on-duty watch commander requested the help of the Crash Analysis Reconstruction (CAR) Team, homicide detectives, and Crime Lab technicians. Detectives are urging the driver to come forward by calling 9-1-1 and turning themselves in. Anyone with information about this crash should call 801-799-3000 and reference case number 23-144525. This crash marks the 6th traffic-related fatality and 11th homicide in Salt Lake City for 2023. No other information about the man will be released until next of kin notifications are made. The CAR Team is a multi-jurisdictional crash team that investigates crashes involving serious physical injuries or death. Members of the CAR Team receive specialized training in collision examination, speed analysis, vehicle dynamics, occupant kinematics, scene photography, surveying equipment, crash scene mapping, evidence collection and computer aided drawing programs. The CAR Team includes law enforcement from the Salt Lake City Police Department and several other Salt Lake Valley law enforcement agencies. A PIO responded to the scene and provided community updates. Two photos taken on scene are being released.
