SLCPD Investigate Poplar Grove Shooting, Arrest 31-Year-Old WomanSALT LAKE CITY — Officers with Salt Lake City Police Department have safely arrested a 31-year-old woman accused of shooting and injuring a 33-year-old man in the Poplar Grove neighborhood. This investigation started at 12:10 a.m., on Friday, August 11, 2023, when SLC911 got a call about a fight near 300 South Post Street. As officers responded, at least one other call came in about a shooting. Officers arrived, secured the scene, and started an investigation. The preliminary investigation shows the suspect, Vanessa Johnson, pulled out a gun and shot the victim after the two got into a fight over a parking spot in a nearby alley. Paramedics treated and released the man. He did not need to go to the hospital. Officers executed a court-authorized search warrant and recovered a handgun from Johnson’s car. Officers took Johnson to the Salt Lake County Metro Jail and booked her on charges of aggravated assault and felony discharge of a firearm. Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
