SLCPD Investigating Downtown Shooting, 1 Person Killed

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department is investigating a deadly shooting in downtown.

This investigation started at 4:04 a.m. on Sunday, September 3, 2023, when SLC911 received a 9-1-1 call about a person being shot at 128 West 300 South.

Officers arrived on scene within two minutes and found community members performing life-saving efforts on a man.

Officers took over life-saving efforts, but the man died on scene.

The shooting happened in a parking lot in between Pierpont Avenue and 300 South.

When officers arrived, they found a large and chaotic scene.

Officers arrested two people for interfering with the investigation. Their names and ages will be released once they are booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail.

Officers and detectives are working to identify the shooter. No arrests connected to the shooting itself have been made.

Detectives are asking that anyone who has information about the shooting, including photos or videos of the moments leading up, during, and after the shooting, to call 801-799-3000.

There is no known danger to the community. The shooting does not appear to be random.

A Salt Lake City Police Public Information Officer (PIO) is on scene.

Media can meet the PIO in front of 110 West 300 South for interviews.

There are no road closures associated to this investigation.

The parking lot where the shooting happened, however, does remain closed. Community members who have parked cars will not be allowed into the scene until the investigation is complete.

Several photos from the scene are being released.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.

The SLCPD Homicide Squad will work with the medical examiner’s office to confirm the nan’s name, age, cause of death and to notify next-of-kin.
