SLCPD Officers Respond to Bomb Threat in Wasatch Hollow, Shooting in WestpointeSALT LAKE CITY — Today, officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department responded to two unrelated events – a bomb threat in the Wasatch Hollow neighborhood and a shooting in the Westpointe neighborhood. The first investigation started at 9:36 a.m. on Sunday, September 24, 2023, when SLC911 received information about a suspicious circumstance at The King’s English Bookstore, located at 1511 South 1500 East. Officers treated the suspicious circumstance as a potential bomb threat, based on the information they developed while investigating. They worked with store employees to evacuate the building. A Salt Lake City Police Airport Division K-9 team responded to the scene and determined there to be no threat to the community. During the investigation, officers closed 1500 East from Emerson Avenue to Kensington Avenue. After officers gave the all-clear, they re-opened 1500 East and turned the building back over to the business owner to resume operations. The investigation into who made the threat – and why – is ongoing. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call 801-799-3000. The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Airport Division’s K-9 Squad consists of five officers and their K-9 partners and a sergeant. The K-9 teams are trained and certified in the detection of explosive materials. Each K-9 team starts with 16 weeks of initial training in Texas followed by daily training to maintain a stringent annual recertification. The second investigation started at 11:08 a.m. when SLC911 received a 9-1-1 call about a possible domestic disturbance at 1865 West Independence Boulevard. As officers responded, more information came in about shots being fired. Officers immediately expedited their response, based on the new information. Officers arrived on scene within two minutes of the first report of shots being fired. They immediately started checking the area for any potential threats and victims. Officers learned two suspects left the area, in a car, right after the shooting. Despite multiple rounds being fired by the suspect(s), no one got hurt during the shooting. Detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Special Victims Unit have been notified of the incident and will continue the investigation. No arrests have been made. No additional details about this case are being released due to the ongoing investigation. A Salt Lake City Police Department Public Information Officer (PIO) responded to both scenes to provide media and community members updates. Photos from the scenes are being released.
