SLCPD Taking Steps to Help Ensure Safety of Jewish, Muslim CommunitiesSALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department continues to take proactive steps to help ensure the safety of the Jewish and Muslim communities who live, work, and visit Salt Lake City. Beginning Saturday, October 7, 2023, in response to the attack on Israel, the Salt Lake City Police Department started enhanced patrols at the three Jewish centers in the city. The Salt Lake City Police Department is also taking steps to help ensure the safety and security of the Muslim people and their community centers in the city. Additionally, the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Intelligence Center (SLIC) continues to work with state, regional, national, and federal law enforcement partners to monitor the situation, safeguard potential targets, increase outreach, and enhance the department’s operational readiness. The Salt Lake City Police Department joins law enforcement agencies across the country to focus on deterrence and reassurance. The increase of officers patrolling at and around our city’s Jewish and Muslim centers serves to help deter any criminal activity and to help reassure the community of their safety. The Salt Lake City Police Department has remained in regular contact with the leaders of the city’s Jewish and Muslim centers to provide them updates and information about security and crime prevention. The steps the Salt Lake City Police Department is taking are not in response to any known threat. The Salt Lake City Police Department wants community members to feel safe and to go about their daily lives. Community members are encouraged to maintain a heightened awareness of their surroundings. If someone sees something that is out of the ordinary or potential threat, they are urged to call 9-1-1 immediately. The Salt Lake City Police Department believes it is safer to report something by calling 9-1-1 than to do nothing. If a community member receives any type of threat, they should call 9-1-1 and report it. The Salt Lake City Police Department will work safely and as quickly as possible to evaluate the incident. The Salt Lake City Police Department works with its state and federal law enforcement partners, including the FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office to help ensure community safety. Those who make threats, or violate the law, will be investigated and their case referred for prosecution. Violence and hate of any type are not tolerated in Salt Lake City. Community members who have any information about any potential violence or hate crimes should call 9-1-1. Additionally, the Salt Lake City Police Department has an online anonymous crime tip line. The Salt Lake City Police Department recognizes that hate crimes or bias incidents can broadly impact our community. Any person who needs to speak with a victim advocate for support and resources can call 801-580-7969. All services are free, and callers can get information anonymously. ###
