SLCPD Homicide Detectives Arrest Two SuspectsSALT LAKE CITY — Today, the Salt Lake City Police Department announced the arrest of two 15-year-old juveniles for the murder of a 23-year-old man. On Saturday, October 14, 2023, on behalf of the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Homicide Squad, which is leading the investigation, the Salt Lake City Police Department’s SWAT Team, Gang Unit, and Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) executed several court authorized search warrants as part of this investigation. Following the search warrants, detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Homicide Squad booked two suspects into the Salt Lake County Juvenile Detention Center. Both suspects have been charged with murder. A third suspect has been identified and contacted by detectives, but that person, at this time, is not facing charges. This investigation started at 1:43 a.m. on Friday, October 13, 2023, when a community member called 9-1-1 and reported someone down on the ground at 600 East 200 South. Salt Lake City Fire and Gold Cross Ambulance responded. During life-saving efforts, emergency crews realized Rory Swimm had been shot. Swimm died on scene. This shooting does not appear to be random. Rather, detectives believe the suspects were out looking for Swimm and his friends after an argument occurred earlier in the morning. After shooting Swimm, the suspects left in a car. The arrest of both suspects occurred without incident. Because both suspects are juveniles, the Salt Lake City Police Department is not releasing their names. Certain information regarding a juvenile’s records, including pleadings and other court/legal records, may be released to third parties by the Utah State Courts or the district attorney’s office. Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. No further information on this case is being released. This case marked the 14th homicide in Salt Lake City for 2023.
