SLCPD Detectives Arrest Suspect in Downtown Murder Investigation

SALT LAKE CITY — Detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Homicide Squad have safely arrested a 41-year-old man accused of murdering a 65-year-old man.

Detectives have booked 41-year-old Nathan David Evans into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail. He is charged with one count of murder and one count of obstruction of justice.

“Our patrol officers and detectives have worked quickly to reach this stage in the investigation,” said Chief Mike Brown. “While we aim on preventing crime, when it happens, we’re committed to catching those responsible quickly. Our detectives don’t give up. This is the second homicide suspect arrested in 24 hours. It showcases the skills and dedication of our officers and detectives.”

This investigation started at 11:18 a.m., on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, when officers learned about a person unresponsive inside of “A Place for Your Stuff,” located at 502 West 300 South. This location is also commonly referred to by some in the community as the “TSP” (Temporary Storage Place).

The victim’s identification is known but detectives are working to notify his family.

Both the victim and suspect worked at the warehouse.

During their investigation, homicide detectives located several pieces of evidence inside the warehouse, including a jacket belonging to Evans.

The motive is still under investigation.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call 801-799-3000.

Victim advocates with the Salt Lake City Police Department are providing resources to Advantage Services, the organization that runs the warehouse.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
