SLCPD Homicide Detectives Arrest Glendale Murder Suspect

SALT LAKE CITY — Today, detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Homicide Squad safely booked 32-year-old Vanessa Nicole Johnson into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail for the alleged murder of 45-year-old Jeremy Robert Martin.

This investigation started at 9:18 p.m. on Saturday, December 30, 2023, when SLC911 received information about an unresponsive man on the ground near Wenco Circle and Wenco Drive.

Salt Lake City Fire and Gold Cross Ambulance responded to the scene and began life-saving efforts.

Despite emergency life-saving care, the man died on scene.

SLCPD patrol officers responded, secured the scene, and began looking for the suspect and any witnesses.

During the investigation, SLCPD homicide detectives found video that captured the shooting.

The video shows the suspect, after the shooting, getting into a car and leaving at a high rate of speed.

Detectives determined the car belonged to Johnson.

In the days following the shooting, SLCPD patrol officers and detectives worked to find Johnson and arrest her.

Detectives have learned prior to the shooting, Johnson and Martin got into an argument. For an unknown reason, Johnson is accused of pulling out a gun and shooting Martin.

The firearm has not been recovered.

Anyone with information on this case, including information about the firearm, is asked to call 801-799-3000 or submit an anonymous tip using the City Protect App and reference case number 23-291494.

If anyone ever finds a firearm, they should call 9-1-1, and avoid handling the firearm for safety and evidentiary purposes.

This is the third person arrested for murder in Salt Lake City this week. All three murder investigations are unrelated.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
