SLCPD Arrest Man Accused of Sexually Assaulting Woman in DowntownSALT LAKE CITY — Detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Special Victims Unit (SVU) have arrested a 41-year-old man accused of physically and sexually assaulting a woman in downtown. Based on the preliminary investigation, the attacker did not know the victim. The suspect is identified as Marcos Reyes. To protect the identity of the victim, no information about her is being released. This investigation started at 3:41 a.m. on Thursday, February 8, 2024, when SLC911 received a call from a community member about a possible sexual assault in progress near 100 South Main Street. Patrol officers responded and saw Reyes assaulting the woman. Officers took Reyes into custody. He is accused of resisting arrest. Paramedics provided medical care to the woman for non-life-threatening injuries. Detectives booked Reyes into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges of rape, object rape, forcible sexual abuse, and interference with arresting officer. The Salt Lake City Police Department recognizes that sexual violence involving an unknown attacker can increase alarm within the community. However, research shows most sexual violence involves acquaintances and intimate partner violence. Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos. The Salt Lake City Police Department is committed to helping survivors of sexual assault receive a well-coordinated, victim-centered, and trauma-informed law enforcement response, regardless of when the assault happened. Our dedicated responses include connecting the survivor with options for victim advocacy, free emergency contraception, medical treatment, information about victim services, and mental health care.
