SLCPD Arrest Man Accused of Threatening Officers with a GunSALT LAKE CITY — Officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department have safely arrested a 36-year-old man after he allegedly pulled out a loaded gun and threatened two officers. “This case highlights the dangers and the unpredictability our officers face every day,” said Chief Mike Brown. “I am very impressed by the way our officers handled this dynamic situation, and I’m glad that no one was hurt.” This investigation began at 3:54 p.m. on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, when a man, later identified as 36-year-old Miles Moreland, confronted two officers assigned to the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Central Patrol Division’s Homeless Resource Center Squad near 151 East 700 South. Based on the preliminary information, the two officers were patrolling the area when Moreland allegedly reached into his waistband, pulled out a gun, and threatened them. Officers safely arrested Miles after a brief standoff. No one was injured. Officers booked Moreland into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on two counts of aggravated assault. Two photos from the scene are being released. Media may use these photos with credit to the Salt Lake City Police Department. Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
